KIEV, Ukraine: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Sunday that an evacuation of the Azovstal plant in Mariupol, which is underway, is begun. Zelensky wrote, "The first wave of roughly 100 persons is already heading to the controlled area."

The evacuees are expected to arrive in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine's southernmost city, on Monday, as per reports

The evacuation began at 4 p.m. local time, according to Petro Andryushchenko, a Mariupol mayor's advisor on Telegram. According to Zelensky, Ukrainian authorities are working with the UN to evacuate more inhabitants from the plant.

On Thursday, Zelensky and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres met in New York to discuss the evacuation of Mariupol. Since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began, Mariupol, a strategic Azov Sea port city in eastern Ukraine, has faced significant fighting.
