During the European Year of Languages in 2001, the European Day of Languages (EDL) was first observed. The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe resolved to make EDL an annual celebration, taking place on September 26 each year, at the conclusion of this campaign. Millions of individuals organise or take part in events each year to promote linguistic variety and the capacity to speak other languages in the member states of the Council and other places.

The overall goal is to highlight the great linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe, which must be promoted and preserved, as well as to broaden the scope of languages that individuals study throughout their lives in order to enhance their plurilingual abilities and foster intercultural understanding. The European Day of Languages (EDL) provides a chance to commemorate all of Europe's languages, especially minority and immigrant languages.

The twentieth anniversary of the European Day of Languages will occur on September 26, 2021. The Day has honoured the diverse tapestry of languages coexisting in Europe and beyond since 2001. According to Marija Pejinovi Buri, secretary general of the Council of Europe “The European Day of Languages reminds us that all voices matter and that together we can overcome linguistic and cultural divides in our societies”.

The European Centre for Modern Languages of the Council of Europe (ECML), which supports innovation and excellence in language instruction, will participate in a significant event on September 24 in Graz, Austria.

Other events planned across the continent to commemorate 20 years of linguistic and cultural diversity include: the Fête des Langues européennes in Aix-en-Provence (France), the Foreign languages we can speak survey in Haabneeme (Estonia), the Sprkdagkonferanse in Halden (Norway), an EDL Language festival in Ljubljana (Slovenia), He beauty of words - eота реи language week in Lip Open to the World in Venice (Italy), organised in partnership with the Council of Europe Venice Office, and Language Competences in the European Education Area, a virtual conference hosted by the European Commission, are examples of events that took place yesterday and today.
