American tennis player Chris Evert recalled the ups and downs during his career with fellow compatriot Martina Navratilova, saying that the two are very close to each other.

Evert said in a telephone interview to The Associated Press, "My sister died in February and Martina was with me at the time. She also attended his funeral. She stayed in my house till 10 pm. She and Pam Shriver were with me. Evert said, 'Martina is definitely one of my closest friends. Now we have no competition, so there is no tension in our relationship. It is a feeling.

Wimbledon final was played five times between Evert and Navratilova. The rivalry of the two is compared to that of Navratilova - Steffi Graf, Pete Sampras - Andre Agassi, Rafael Nadal - Roger Federer and Björn Borg-John McEnroe. Evert said, 'The competition on the court is very tough. And every player brings new fans with him. Evert and Navratilova, who were rivals against each other in singles, won the French Open and Wimbledon by making doubles. The first match between the two veterans was played in Akron, Ohio, in 1973, when 18-year-old Evert defeated 16-year-old Navratilova.
