United States: As part of a wider effort to compete with TikTok and show people posts from users they don't follow, Facebook parent meta platform Inc. will soon ask some users what they like to see in their feeds. would ask for more direct feedback on that - and what they don't.

The "Show more" and "Show less" buttons that users will soon see on posts that appear in their feeds will give users a more direct way to tell the company what they're interested in. In an effort to improve "Search" by showing its apps and users new posts and videos from users they don't already follow, Facebook is using that feedback to temporarily change the type of content users view.

Although Meta already uses likes and follows among other cues to personalize user feeds on Facebook and Instagram, the new "Show more" and "Show less" buttons are aimed at a more immediate and momentary effect.

According to Tom Ellison, head of Facebook's core apps, using the buttons will likely impact the algorithm for 30 to 60 days and help determine the types of accounts that appear in the feed.

Its purpose is to communicate to Facebook "how do you feel about the content at the moment," Alison said, adding that "we're seeing this as a sign that you're giving us what you're looking for rather than liking a post." I'm a little more time bound".

CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said that Meta's primary goal is to increase "search". This is considered one of TikTok's major strengths, and Meta has spent a lot of time and money trying to develop a rival short-form video product called Reels.

Only certain posts will have "show more" and "show less" options, but Ellison said they will apply to ads as well. He acknowledged that "it's not designed for ads", but added that "you can apply these controls to ads." Providing a relevant experience is the main concern here, he continued.
