New Delhi: The family of two BJP workers killed in violence that erupted after the assembly election results in West Bengal have approached the Supreme court. The petition said that violence against opposition activists took place at the behest of the government and the administration. Therefore, the Supreme Court should hand over the investigation of both murders and other cases of violence to the CBI or constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for the same.
On May 2, when the West Bengal Assembly election results were coming in, two BJP workers Abhijeet Sarkar and Haran Adhikari were killed in Kolkata. Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers are accused of involvement in the case. The Avijit government had also reported that his life was in danger on Facebook Live before his murder. It is alleged that the local police had closed their eyes on the violence being committed by TMC activists. Which led to the murder of Abhijeet and Haran.
The Supreme court has filed a petition by Avijit Sarkar's brother Bishwajit Sarkar and Haran Adhikari's wife Swarnlata Adhikari. Senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani on both sides argued in a bench of Justices Vineet Saran and B R Gavai. Jethmalani said the government and police promoted violence. Eyewitnesses of these incidents are also present. But the investigation is being carried out. Therefore, it is necessary to have an impartial investigation into these incidents under the supervision of the Supreme court.
