India's famous legendary footballer Surjit Sengupta has passed away. Surjeet breathed his last at a private hospital in Kolkata on Thursday. 71-year-old Surjeet had come under the grip of corona infection last month, after which he was undergoing treatment. He was on ventilator since last week.
Surjeet was part of the Indian team that won the bronze medal at the 1970 Asian Games. After starting his football career for Khidirpur club, he played in three big clubs of Kolkata. One of the best winger in the country, Surjeet has participated for Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan Sporting and East Bengal.
West Bengal CM Mamta Banerjee has expressed deep grief over the death of Surjit Sengupta. Mamta Banerjee tweeted, 'Today we lost the legendary star footballer Surjit Sengupta. He was a heartthrob of football fans and an outstanding national player as well as a role model. He will always be in our hearts. Sengupta was part of that team of East Bengal.
