Famous Malayalam poet Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri passed away at 94

Kochi: Veteran Malayalam poet and Jnanpith awardee Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri died in Thrissur, Kerala on Thursday. He was 94. Akkitam was born on 8 March 1926 in Palakkad district of Kerala and since childhood he had a deep affection for literature and art. In addition to poetry, Akkitam has also written plays and novels.

Akkitam, who has been awarded the Padma Award, has also been honored with the Sahitya Academy Award, Kerala Sahitya Academy Award (twice), the Matrubhoomi Award, the Vayalar Award and the Kabir Award. Akkitam's poems combine Indian philosophical and social values that act as a bridge between modernity and tradition. He has written 55 books so far and 45 of them are poetry collections.

He has also translated works of other Indian languages. His most famous poetry book is 'Irupadam Nutanidee Etihasam' which is very popular among the readers. Some of his famous books are "Khand Kavya", "Katha Kavya", "Charitra Kavya" and lyrics. Some of his well-known compositions include "Veeravadam", "Baladarshanam", "Nimisha Kshetram", "Amrita Khatika", "Akchitam Kavitatakka", "Epic of Twentieth Century" and "Anticlamam". Let us tell you that he has also been awarded Sahitya Akademi Award in 1973, Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1972 and Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award in 1988 and Kabir Samman.
