Farmers cheer up in Telangana as the sky gets clear

Moderate to heavy rainfall was recorded in the erstwhile Warangal district on Monday. The district has been receiving continuous rainfall since Sunday afternoon much to the delight of the farming community. Tanks, lakes and streams are overflowing in many parts of the district. Owing to good rainfall and availability of water in the tanks and reservoirs, paddy transplantation is being done at a brisk pace.

Speaking to a leading daily, Warangal Urban and Rural Districts’ District Agriculture Officer (DAO) Usha Dayal said, “While the paddy target for this Vaanakalam season in Warangal Urban district is 75,000 acres, 80 percent of the transplantation has been done so far, and the area under paddy cultivation may be increased by another 10,000 acres.” In Warangal Rural district, the target is 1.1 lakh acres which is expected to reach up to 1.3 lakh acres, she said.

Mahabubabad DAO B Chatru Naik said that the paddy cultivation in the district would also exceed the normal sown area this monsoon season. “We expect the paddy cultivation to go up to 1.6 lakh acres from the normal area of 1.33 lakh acres. Chilli, which was sown in 35,000 acres in the last Vaanakalam season, too is likely to increase up to 45,000-49,000 acres owing to water availability,” he added. He also stated that 90 percent of the paddy cultivation had been done in the district.

Nallabelli Mandal in Warangal Rural district recorded the highest rainfall of 12.48 cm, followed by Shayampet Mandal at 10.72 cm rainfall and Geesugonda with 8.42 cm. In Warangal Urban district, Kamalapur recorded 9.92 cm and Hanamkonda recorded 9.84 cm rainfall.
