Deepawali also is known as Diwali is the festival of lights. People from all religions and cultures celebrate this festival of light. The sheer joy of shopping, getting dressed up, visiting relatives, friends, and colleagues with sweets is ultimate. But to every good side, there is a darker side too which has been being ignored for last so many decades. People from few years are doing discussions and have now become a voice. Still many of them don’t really take an interest, they definitely know that the point raised is valid and needs to be looked at with a humanitarian approach. Every year we spend millions on Firecrackers and more across India knowing it is just a waste. We burn down a massive amount which if invested good causes can bring a better chance. One of the good approaches is to feed the hungry underprivileged strays.

Animals and birds are very sensitive to hearing. The loud sound levels can cause permanent damage to their hearing. Many birds have poor vision at night. They are bound to bump into unknown objects and hurt themselves. Hazardous smoke affects their breathing too. People enjoy the instant bright glare of firecrackers but it can blind flying birds. Owls, kites, and bats are the worst-affected during Diwali. Most pets and strays are seen running and hiding aimlessly with every firecracker sound. They hear sounds that the human ear cannot. Some senses can be seen in dogs as they may display psychological symptoms of stress like shivering, drooling, howling, and excessive barking. Pet animals often hide under furniture and strays look for dark corners to hide.

Many of us cuddle our pets when fireworks begin, hoping that it will calm them down for now. Try play fetch or some other game which your pet prefers. Never cuddle up or hold your pet as they are dependent on you. Your action makes them feel that even their master is scared and may slip into a worse condition. Make temporary shelters or allow stray animals in your parking lots to take cover. Feed them some weight food if you are an animal feeder.

So on this #Diwali2020, it’s an appeal to be a bit more compassionate, a bit more sensitive towards these animals, and enjoy the festival with loads of lights and sweets. Also in most state Governments have appealed to citizens and asked them to avoid firecrackers.
