A few more private hospitals in Telangana are expected to lose their permits to treat Covid-19 patients, as a committee that consists of senior health officials are expected to recommend reviewing their status in the coming days. Health Minister Eatala Rajender on Tuesday said the intention was not to shut down private hospitals or to reduce the number of dedicated Covid-19 beds in the State. He said, “On many occasions, we urged private hospitals to avoid commercializing the Covid-19 pandemic. However, action has to be taken on hospitals that are brazenly defying our guidelines and price ceiling."

Rajender said, “At the PHC level, screening and consultation facilities will be provided. Depending on the condition of the patient, they will be advised to either take home isolation or referred to a higher health care center. I appeal to people not to delay treatment, which eventually impacts lungs." The Minister was referring to instances where Covid-19 positive patients in the State were arriving at government hospitals at a very late stage.

All efforts are there to ensure that all the State-run Covid-19 treatment facilities have enough supplies of medicines for patients. “We are doing our best to ensure drugs such as Hydroxychloroquine, Dexamethasone and other antibiotics are available right at the PHC level. We have also provided training to district medical and health officers on prescribing such medicines through senior doctors,” the Minister added.
