In contrast to Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, Ketan Mehta claims that his version was more impartial. His movie was put on hold after she left the endeavour.

In 2016, director Ketan Mehta announced a movie about Rani Lakshmibai with Kangana Ranaut as the lead. However, in the years that followed, Kangana produced Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, leaving Mehta in the dust. Ranaut was supposed to star in Mehta's film, Jhansi Ki Rani: The Warrior Queen, but when she created Manikarnika with director Krish and producer Kamal Jain, Mehta sued the actor and the producer, alleging a breach of trust. Mehta has since discussed it once more and claimed that the movie, which Kangana co-directed, was "jingoistic."

Filmmaker Ketan Mehta recently criticised Kangana Ranaut's 2019 film Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi in an interview. The director talked openly about his research for the Queen of Jhansi movie, which he had originally started with Kangana Ranaut. According to Ketan, the final movie was very different from what he had originally imagined.

Mehta told  "The entire script was changed. My project was an international co-production. It was about British Generals' obsession with capturing the Rani of Jhansi. It was more balanced. Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi became jingoistic and nationalistic." Mehta had researched the film for many years, and had plans of making it on a large scale. The director said that this alleged breach of trust was "unfortunate" and "heart-breaking." "A lot of work had gone into it. What finally was made was pathetic, to say the least," he added.

Ankita Lokhande, Suresh Oberoi, Atul Kulkarni, and Danny Denzongpa were all featured in Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi in addition to Kangana Ranaut. It is a biopic about Rani Lakshmi Bai, who commanded Jhansi's army in the Indian Rebellion of 1857 against the East India Company. Kangana plays her in the film. Ankita portrayed Jhalkari Bai, a soldier in Rani Lakshmi Bai's army and the queen's assistant.

Emergency will be Kangana's upcoming film. In addition to portraying Indira Gandhi, the actor also produced and directed the film. Her other upcoming films are Sarvesh Mewara's action movie Tejas and P Vasu's Chandramukhi 2. The release date for Tejas is October 20.
