HELSINKI: A Finnish businessman said on March 23 that he has made an offer to buy Manchester United (MU), as per reports by Finnish national broadcaster Yle. Manchester United is currently owned by the American Glazer family, who announced in November 2022 that they were ready to sell the club.
Manchester United is reportedly valued at more than five billion euros (5.45 million U.S. dollars), according to foreign media. The club's current market value, according to Finnish entrepreneur Thomas Zilliacus, is less than 3.9 billion US dollars, or 3.6 billion euros.
Zilliacus, 69, built his money through real estate deals, stock purchases, and business ventures while serving as Nokia's Asia director in the 1980s and 1990s.
In the world of sports, Zilliacus has served as the chairman of the Helsinki-based professional ice hockey team Jokerit as well as the co-owner of the Finnish football club HJK.
The richest man in Britain, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, as well as the Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani are potential buyers of United.
Nasser Al-Khelaif, the owner of Paris Saint-Germain, is also thought to have had a key part in the offer made to United.
The existing owners of United are waiting to see whether any other purchase offers will come in.
UEFA, the continent's regulatory body of football, forbids ownership of multiple clubs participating in the same league.
Together with Paris Saint-Germain, Qatar's QSI also owns the French team OGC Nice, the Swiss club Lausanne, and Ratcliffe. According to media sources, QSI is seeking for minority shareholders with United, but the rule does not apply to them.
