Eleven people were reported missing, and police said a rescue mission was underway for two people trapped aboard a ferry that caught fire off the coast of Corfu, Greece.
The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Insular Policy informed the media that a total of 278 individuals were evacuated to safety on Corfu, including one person who was not on the official list of those onboard. "There were 239 passengers and 51 crew members onboard the Euroferry Olympia, according to the official lists the vessel's captain had submitted to port authorities in Igoumenitsa before departure," Nikos Lagadianos, a senior official with the Greek Coast Guard, said at a media briefing in Piraeus.
According to media sources, the two stranded people were lorry drivers. According to the head of the Corfu hospital, three persons were mildly hurt. The Grimaldi Group's Italian-flagged ferry had departed from the Greek port of Igoumenitsa on its way to Brindisi when the catastrophe happened under still-unknown circumstances. Nearby ships and Coast Guard vessels hurried into the vicinity to gather passengers who had used lifeboats to leave the ferry.
According to a Grimaldi Group press release, no fuel spill has occurred at sea, and the ship's stability appears to be unaffected. Tugboats were ready to travel to the Euroferry Olympia to deal with the emergency, according to the report. In 1995, the Euroferry Olympia was launched. According to the press release, "the top management of the Grimaldi Group expresses its regret for the tragedy and will fully collaborate with the authorised authorities to throw light on the incident."
