New Delhi: A hospital in India's capital Delhi received help from Ahmedabad to give life to a man who breathed his breath momentby moment. For the first time in north India, a hospital has successfully transplanted both lungs in a person with the help of special machines. One of the highlights is that this double lung transplant has been successful even though the patient is corona positive.

For the first time in the same north India, a 55-year-old patient has undergone double lung transplant surgery with the help of extended extracorporial membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. The cardiopulmonary rehab team of transplant surgeons, pulmonologists, critical care specialists, cardiac anaesthetists and doctors at Max Healthcare has carried out this very difficult operation which is also north India's first double lung transplant operation. The patient was positive from corona even after which the transplant was successful.

He was suffering from 55-year-old Gyan Chand Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) from Meerut UP. His lungs were damaged due to corona virus. They were in a very unstable and serious situation. He was on high flow oxygen. The only option to save his life was a lung transplant. He was tested at Max Hospital (Saket, Delhi) and was placed on the waiting list for lung transplant by a heart-lung transplant team led by Dr Rahul Chandola.
