KHARTOUM:   John Godfrey, the first US ambassador to Sudan in 25 years arrived in the country on Wednesday in the latest sign of improved relations between the two countries after the United States removed Sudan from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, the American embassy in Khartoum said in a statement.

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Godfrey said: "I am delighted to arrive in Sudan. I look forward to strengthening relations between Americans and Sudanese and to assisting the Sudanese people's aspirations to freedom, peace, justice, and a transition to democracy." In 1993, the United States listed Sudan as a country that sponsors terrorism, accusing Khartoum of supporting Al Qaeda, whose founder Osama bin Laden lived in Sudan from 1992 to 1996.

The US demoted its diplomatic mission in Sudan from ambassador to charge d'affaires in 1997 and placed unilateral economic sanctions on Khartoum for allegedly supporting terrorism.

In December 2019, Washington made clear that it intended to appoint an ambassador to represent it in Khartoum.
Sudan named Nureldin Satti as its first ambassador to the US in 23 years in May 2020. In December 2020, the US removed Sudan from its list of nations supporting terrorism.
