Rabat: The largest war games event in Africa begins Tuesday, and Israeli soldiers will participate in military drills there for the first time, according to the Israeli army.

According to a statement released by the Israeli army late on Monday, this is the first time the IDF has actively participated in the international exercise known as "African Lion."

Along with about 8,000 soldiers from 18 different nations, "a delegation of 12 soldiers and commanders from the Golani Reconnaissance Battalion" — an elite infantry unit — has been sent.

Morocco and the United States jointly organised the event, which is now in its 19th edition.

The soldiers will concentrate on training in a variety of combat scenarios that combine urban warfare and underground warfare over the course of the following two weeks, according to an Israeli statement.

Israel took part in the event last year, but it sent only international military observers rather than actual troops.

The tactical land, sea, air, and special forces training exercises, as well as airborne operations, are all included in the war games, according to the Moroccan Royal Armed Forces (FAR). These exercises also involve fighting weapons of mass destruction.

Since their relations were normalised in December 2020, Morocco and Israel have been working to increase their cooperation in the military, security, trade, and tourism sectors.
