Valletta: On Monday, a tragic incident happened in which five people were killed as a light aircraft carrying out a French surveillance mission over the Mediterranean crashed on take-off in Malta.

According to the Maltese government, “the flight was part of a customs operation the French have been conducting for the last five months, tracking human trafficking and drugs smuggling”.

It was a reconnaissance aircraft... carrying out surveillance operations over the Mediterranean for the defence ministry," said, French Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian.

"Official information, footage and eyewitnesses... clearly indicate that there was no explosion prior to impact," the government added.
