FM Sitharaman discusses geopolitical concerns with IMF chief

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met with IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva on Tuesday to address a range of issues, including the current geopolitical scenario and its economic implications, and to emphasise the Indian government's commitment to supporting growth through capital investment.

Sitharaman also mentioned India's flexible fiscal posture, which has been accompanied by big structural reforms and robust monetary policies, during the discussion with Georgieva on the sidelines of the present annual spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank. India is anticipated to have the highest growth rate among the world's main economies.

IMF Managing Director Georgieva mentioned India's well-targeted policy mix has helped the economy remain resilient despite restricted fiscal space. The finance minister also spoke about the country's tenacity in maintaining its position as the world's fastest-growing economy despite the hurdles brought by the coronavirus outbreak.

She thanked India for its assistance in helping Sri Lanka deal with its economic problems, according to a statement released by the finance ministry, and promised that the IMF would continue to work with the island nation. Sitharaman and Georgieva also expressed concern about the global economy's impact on geopolitical developments, as well as the challenges posed by growing energy prices.

Sitharaman emphasised the government's commitment to assist economic growth through capital expenditure (capex) and stated that the country's flexible fiscal stance, along with important structural changes and strong monetary policies, had aided in the country's post-pandemic recovery.
