Eu: The country's Internal Security Agency (ABW) announced on Friday that an 18-year-old who converted to Islam and was constructing a suicide belt had been detained in southern Poland.

The agency stated in a statement that the suspect was "assembling data and partially-finished components to make a suicide belt, with which he planned to carry out a bomb attack on a state office building." Evidence of the planned crime was discovered as a result of the man's arrest and residence search.

Investigators identified the suspect as a Polish national who converted to Islam at the end of 2022. He confessed to being motivated by the actions of the Islamic State (IS, formerly known as ISIS) terrorist group as well as the late Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden.

The name of the suspect was withheld by ABW. In the province of Lower Silesia, Zabkowice Slaskie is where he was detained. After searching his home, ABW agents also searched the residences of a number of other people who had interacted with the suspect and might have been aware of the attack's plan.

Due to the seriousness of the case, the Organised Crime and Corruption Division in Wroclaw has taken over the prosecution from the local authorities. The man is accused of planning to use explosives to endanger the lives of numerous people or cause significant property damage, as well as participating in an organised criminal group with the intent to commit a terrorism crime.

In 2020, the Polish government detained four ISIS supporters who were later identified as Tajik immigrants and sent back to Tajikistan. The group was charged with attempting to convert Poles to their cause. Less than 0.1% of Poles identify as Muslims, and Roman Catholicism makes up the majority of the country's population.
