New Delhi: The central government has now become active about the rising prices of food items in the country. Union Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan has called a meeting of the State Food Ministers to discuss the matter. This meeting will be held today i.e. on Tuesday. The Center has called this meeting to effectively implement the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act passed by Parliament, to control supply by ensuring supply in food items and to strengthen the ration system.

In view of the rise in prices of pulses and onions, the Food Ministry has advised all the state governments to lift these commodities from the buffer stock of the Center with immediate effect. In this meeting, emphasis will be given on speeding up the nutritional security scheme. All the major issues related to consumers will be discussed with the states in the fifth National Consultation Meeting. These issues are included in the proposed agenda. All states will be asked to implement many new provisions made in the Consumer Protection Act 2019 passed by Parliament.

Paswan said that it is up to the states to bear the huge responsibility to implement the law. Emphasis will be laid on strengthening the infrastructure of district and state-level consumer commissions. There are proposals to set up a Consumer Protection Authority to digitize the Commission, e-filing of complaints, arbitration, and dealing with unfair trade systems. After the passage of the law from Parliament, the date of making rules and regulations has been fixed till the end of December. The opinion of the states will also be sought for this. During this time states have the right to present their case, which will be included in it. The government will advise the states to make buffer stock of pulses and onions.
