New Delhi: Out of the nearly eight crore migrant workers stranded in various states under the Self-Reliant India Package, only 2.5 per cent of the people have been distributed free grain till now. According to information provided by the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution on Sunday, out of an estimated eight crore beneficiary migrant laborers, only 20.26 lakh people have been able to benefit from the scheme.

According to the data, during the Corona crisis, 4.42 lakh tonnes of food grains have been allocated to the states for distribution of free rations to the migrant laborers without ration cards located in different states, but so far only 2.29% of the food grains have been distributed. According to the ministry, there are about eight crore migrant laborers across the country who do not have ration cards. For this, the Central Government has made a provision to distribute five kg of wheat or rice per month and one kg of gram per family free during the two months of May and June under the self-sufficient India package.

The ministry has approved eight lakh tonnes of food grains for the free distribution of foodgrains to these migrants, out of which the states have lifted more than half i.e. 4.42 lakh tonnes of food grains. But out of this, only 10,131 tonnes of food grains have been distributed so far. According to the ministry, the government of India is carrying 100 per cent financial burden of about Rs 3109 crore for grain and about Rs 280 crore for gram.
