In view of the seriousness of adulteration in edible oil, Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Friday directed the state governments to ban the open sale of edible oil. In a tweet, the Union Minister appealed to the state governments to immediately stop the open sale of edible oil.

In his statement, Paswan said that there are constant complaints about the open sale of edible oil against the rules, due to which there is a risk of adulteration. Earlier, in a letter written to the states by the Ministry, instructions were given to ban the open sale of edible oil. The Ministry has asked for strict measures to curb the adulteration of states.

This letter was written to the Food Secretaries and Principal Secretaries of the states on Thursday on behalf of Nidhi Khare, Additional Secretary in the Department of Consumer Affairs under the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. The letter said that the department has received complaints about the open sale of edible oil, which should be banned. Paswan wrote in his tweet, 'There are constant complaints that open edible oil is being sold in the market against the rules, in which there is a risk of adulteration. The Department of Consumer Affairs has directed the State Governments to take strict steps on this and immediately stop the sale of contaminated open oil that is happening without the prescribed packing.
