A local professional football league match between Arma FC and Persebaya Surabaya was played at Javakanjuruhan Stadium in East Java, Indonesia, on the afternoon of October 1. Thousands of spectators flooded into the stadium following the game. Police used tear gas to put it down, and as shocked bystanders rushed for the exit at once, crushing and choking them, deaths occurred.
According to the Indonesian authorities, 174 people—including police and civilians—were killed. 35 children were among the victims. The incident, which killed 328 people, was the second worst soccer stadium tragedy in history, according to local media, following the qualification match between Peru and Argentina in Lima, Peru, in 1964.
