Ranchi: There has been a big loss to the Indian sports world, especially the football world. Former Santosh Trophy player Abhijeet Ganguly died when lightning struck him during daily practice session at the Birsa Munda Stadium here Saturday. While two other footballers were injured.

Police has given information about this. Ganguly, 53, is the football coach of the Dhanbad Railway Division. He was coaching boys and girls in the stadium when it started raining around 7.30 am. Lightning fell on him and two other players.

Current national players Ravi Lal Hembram and Chandan Tudu recovered from it, while Ganguly fainted. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead. Ganguly is survived by a son, wife and mother. He represented the Bihar team in the Santosh Trophy National Football Championship in 1993. Abhijeet was one of the best defenders in 1990.

After this, he got a job in Railways and for many years he represented the Eastern Railway football team in the Inter Zonal Railway Championship. After this he became the coach of Dhanbad Railway Division. Ganguly used to nurture the talent of young players at Birsa Football Club. His team finished third in the District Senior League Championship this season. Fayaz Ahmed, secretary of the Dhanbad Football Association, expressed grief that the city lost a wonderful coach.
