NEW YORK:  Indian-Americans Vinod Khosla, Romesh Wadhwani and Rakesh Gangwal emerged it to the Forbes 2022 list of 400 wealthiest Americans with Zscaler CEO Jay Chaudhry leading the pack with a net worth of USD 8.2 billion. 

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, took first place overall, unseating Jeff Bezos, the former CEO of Amazon, who had previously held the position for four years.

According to Forbes, the 400 richest Americans collectively had a net worth of USD 4 trillion, down USD 500 billion from the previous year.

The cybersecurity company Zscaler was formed in 2008 by Chaudhry, who is ranked 63. He and his family hold 42 percent of the Nasdaq-listed company's equity as of March 2018.

Prior to founding Zscaler, Chaudhry developed SecureIT, CoreHarbor, CipherTrust, and AirDefense, all of which were bought. In order to develop SecureIT, Chaudhry and his wife resigned from their employment and invested their life savings.

In 1980, Chaudhry relocated to the US to pursue higher studies. Today, he resides in Reno, Nevada. 

Vinod Khosla (67), who had a net worth of USD 5.2 billion, was rated 181st. His business, Khosla Ventures, makes investments in cutting-edge technology including robotics and biomedicine. With Andy Bechtolsheim, Bill Joy, and Scott McNealy, Khosla co-founded the computer hardware company Sun Microsystems in 1982.

With a net worth of USD 5.1 billion, Symphony Technology Group's founder and chairman Romesh T. Wadhwani (67) was ranked 196. In order to position SymphonyAI for a future IPO, he resigned as CEO at the beginning of 2022. He also serves as the chairman of ConcertAI, an AI business with a healthcare and life sciences focus that venture capitalist valued at USD 1.9 billion in March 2022.

Rakesh Gangwal, a 69-year-old airline veteran, amassed a net worth of USD 3.7 billion thanks to InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, the largest airline in India by market share.

He began his airline career in 1984 with United Airlines and later served as chairman and chief executive of US Airways Group. With just one aircraft, Gangwal and Rahul Bhatia cco-foundedIndiGo in 2006. The Miami resident, who comes in at number 261 on the list, owns about 37 percent of the company.
