Itanagar: The killing of former Arunachal Pradesh MLA Yumsen Matey in Tirap district on December 16 has raised alarms over the escalating security challenges in the insurgency-prone region. The unidentified assailants brutally attacked Matey, who represented the Khonsa West constituency, during a function in Raho village, highlighting the grim situation in Tirap, Changlang, and Longding districts.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but suspicions point toward involvement by suspected militants, underscoring the vulnerability of the region. Yumsen Matey, who switched from the Indian National Congress to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2015, had a complex political journey that included serving as a Parliamentary Secretary.

The incident occurs against the backdrop of insurgency and unrest in the region, aggravated by the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). Tirap, Changlang, and Longding, sharing a porous border with Myanmar, have become transit routes and hotspots for banned militant groups from Assam and Nagaland.

Recent cases of extortion and abductions in the area raise concerns about the safety of residents. This incident is reminiscent of the 2019 tragedy when National People’s Party (NPP) MLA Tirong Aboh, representing the same Khonsa West constituency, and 10 others fell victim to suspected militants.

As authorities investigate the incident, the focus remains on addressing the root causes of insurgency and ensuring the safety of residents in the troubled border districts of Arunachal Pradesh. Strategic interventions to quell unrest and enhance security measures are imperative to prevent further loss of lives in this fragile region.
