Former Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) leader, Biswajit Daimary resigned from his post of Rajya Sabha MP on Saturday. He is to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formally in New Delhi on Sunday. Daimary recently has submitted his resignation from the working president post of BPF to party chief, Hagrama Mohilary.

He was a MLA in the Assam legislative assembly from 2001-2006 and a Rajya Sabha MP from 2008-2014 and from 2014-2020. The Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections are scheduled to take place in the Bodo Territorial Region on December 7 and 10 this year and his resignation came a month before the elections. Few days back, Sitting MLA from Assam’s Tamulpur constituency, Emmanuel Musahary also resigned from the BPF. Sources said the resignation of two prominent leaders from BPF is likely to strengthen BJP’s position in the upcoming BTC elections. The national party has fielded several candidates against its ally BPF in the BTC polls.

BJP sources said that Daimary had been in constant touch with Assam health minister, Himanta Biswa Sharma before submitting his resignation. Sarma, who is leading the fight against BPF has criticized Mohilary, claiming the latter’s way of functioning has not yielded the desired results in the BTR. Several senior central BJP leaders are likely to be present during formal joining of Daimary to the party. In his resignation, Daimary has stated, “Having been a member of the BPF from the date of party’s inception, it is now time for me to move on,” and added “While my purposes remain the same as it has always been from the very beginning to serve the people of my state and country, I believe I am unable to do this anymore within the party".
