Former Supreme Court of India Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi has been sworn in as a Rajya Sabha member. President Ram Nath Kovind has nominated him to the Rajya Sabha. Gogoi was the 46th Chief Justice of the country. He held this post from October 3, 2018 to November 17, 2019.
On November 9, 2019, a five-member bench of the Supreme Court chaired by Gogoi ruled in the Ayodhya dispute pending for years. Apart from this, the bench headed by him had given decisions in many more cases. This includes cases of Rafale fighter jet deal and women of all ages entering the Sabarimala temple.

Gogoi had said before leaving the post of Chief Justice that the cases pending in Indian courts have been used to weaken this institution. In a letter to the Supreme Court Bar Association, he said that a part of his heartbreak will always be with the Supreme Court. Congress has criticized the government for nominating Gogoi for Rajya Sabha. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha on Monday, nearly four months after the President retired from the post of CJI. The Bar Council of India has justified the decision to nominate Ranjan Gogoi for the Rajya Sabha. The Bar Council has said that this will help in 'coordinating between the legislature and the judiciary.
