Bhubaneswar: In a major event at the Biju Patnaik Sports Award ceremony, former Indian hockey player Lazarus Barla was honored with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award for his significant contributions to sports. The ceremony, held on National Sports Day, saw Barla receive a trophy, a cash prize of Rs 4 lakh, and a citation. The award was presented by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi.

Barla expressed his joy at receiving the award, especially on National Sports Day, which also marks the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand. "It's a great honor to receive this award on such a special day. The Chief Minister has encouraged all senior players to contribute to the growth of sports in our state, so more individuals can have the chance to represent our country on the global stage," Barla said.

The event also recognized other sports personalities. Paris Olympian Kishore Jena received the Biju Patnaik Sports Award for his exceptional performance. Despite finishing ninth in Group A of the men's javelin throw qualification round at the Paris Olympics, Jena was awarded a trophy, Rs 3 lakh, and a citation.

Bijay Kumar Lakra was honored with the Biju Patnaik Sports Award for Excellence in Coaching. Lakra's contributions to coaching were acknowledged with a trophy, a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh, and a citation.

Jafar Iqbal was awarded the Biju Patnaik Sports Award for Best Para-Sportsperson of the Year. He received a trophy, Rs 2 lakh, and a citation for his achievements.

Young athlete Priteesmita Bhoi, just 14 years old, was recognized as the Best Upcoming Athlete (Junior) of the Year. She was awarded a trophy, Rs 2 lakh, and a citation for her promising performance.

In Addition, Rupanwita Panda was named Best Sports Technical Official/Support Staff of the Year. Panda received a trophy, Rs 2 lakh, and a citation for her contributions as a technical official.
