Former Indian forward Surojit Bose, who won the national football league title for Mahindra United with José Ramirez Barreto and Yusif Yakubu in 2005-06, is currently fighting with blood cancer. Barreto of Brazil and Yakubu of Ghana had contributed to Mahindra United's title win just before the start of the I-League.

José (33) is admitted to AIIMS, Delhi, where he is undergoing treatment for blood cancer. Surojit has also played for Mohun Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting Club in Kolkata. He played his last match for Country FC in the I-League in 2014.  José told the media, "I have detected blood cancer, acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) in the first stage. I was admitted on August 7. I am recovering, but after coming to Delhi, a few days have been extremely bad for me. It was difficult. I have had the privilege of taking help from my former colleagues and some football world. "

José hails from Kalyani District in West Bengal, was working as a coach in a football development centre in Pune, where he fell ill. José won the Federation Cup with Mohun Bagan Club, further said, "I had a high fever and I was not able to defecate properly, yet I came to Delhi for some work and on August 6, my health got worse. I am a guest I was living alone in the house. I had some students who helped me to contact my family and also brought me to the hospital. "
