New Delhi: General VP Malik was the President of the Indian Army when the Kargil War began in the summer of 1999. On the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, he today explained how the war had changed the rules of war and India's relations with Pakistan. He said Operation Vijay was a mix of resolute political, military and diplomatic action, which enabled us to turn an adverse situation into a tremendous military and diplomatic victory.

General VP Malik says it changed relations between India and Pakistan drastically. Although Pakistan was driven out by the Indian Army in this war, a Malala General VP continues to live in Malik's mind even today. General VP Malik says the Indian government should have allowed its army to capture Pakistani territories adjoining the LoC (LOC) even before announcing the ceasefire.

Talking to the media, General VP Malik said that Pakistan failed with considerable political and military costs in its objectives. It took some time to reorganize the Indian Army and retaliate properly because of poor intelligence and inadequate surveillance, but, with military successes on the battlefield and a successful political-military strategy, India was able to achieve its political goal and enhance its international image as a responsible, democratic nation, who was determined and capable of defending its territorial integrity.
