New Delhi: India's famous footballer PK Banerjee died in Kolkata on Friday after a long illness, he was 83 years old. Banerjee is survived by his daughter Paula and Poorna, who are well-known academics. His younger brother Prasun Banerjee is the current MP of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The fast-paced striker PK (Pradeep Kumar) Banerjee, who won the 1962 Asian Games gold medal, was suffering from respiratory disease due to pneumonia.

He also had Parkinson's, dementia and heart disease. He was a witness to the golden period of Indian football. PK Banerjee was on a life support system in a hospital in Kolkata from March 2 and breathed his last at 12.40 pm on Friday. Born on 23 June 1936 in Moynaguri on the outskirts of West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district, Banerjee's family had moved to Jamshedpur near her uncle before the partition of the country.

PK Banerjee scored 65 international goals in 84 matches for the national team. In addition to winning the gold medal at the 1992 Jakarta Asian Games, Banerjee led India to the 1960 Rome Olympics, where she drew a 1–1 draw against the French team. Earlier, Banerjee led India to the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and played a key role in a 4–2 win over Australia in the quarter-finals.
