Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren's detention by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been extended by five days.

Soren, a prominent figure from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), was placed under one-day judicial custody by a special court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Ranchi. This action is part of the ongoing investigation into an alleged land scam.

The Enforcement Directorate had requested a ten-day remand for the former Chief Minister, but the court has yet to make a final decision. Justice Dinesh Rai, presiding over the PMLA court, has reserved the order after hearing arguments from both sides.

Soren was apprehended by the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday night following six hours of interrogation regarding his involvement in a money laundering case linked to the aforementioned land scam.

The ED alleges that Soren was interrogated as part of their investigation into a "significant operation involving the illegal transfer of land ownership by organized crime."

The investigation focuses on the substantial amounts of illicit funds generated through the falsification of official records. This process involved presenting fake individuals as sellers and buyers through forged or fraudulent documents to fraudulently acquire extensive land parcels valued in the millions.
