K.P. Kunhikannan, a former MLA of the Uduma constituency in Kerala and a well-known Congress leader from Kasaragod, passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2024, at the age of 74. His death followed complications from injuries sustained in a car accident earlier this month.

Kunhikannan was injured on September 4 when the car he was traveling in collided with a concrete divider while he was returning home from a meeting in Kanhangad. He initially received treatment at a local hospital in Kanhangad but was later transferred to a private hospital in Kannur due to the severity of his injuries.

A close ally of the late Congress veteran K. Karunakaran, Kunhikannan was elected to the 8th Kerala Legislative Assembly from the Uduma constituency in the 1987 elections. He was highly regarded in his community for his dedication to public service.

Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, V.D. Satheesan, expressed his condolences on Kunhikannan’s passing. The Congress leader had been battling multiple complications, including rib injuries and pneumonia, after his vehicle swerved to avoid an oncoming lorry and hit a concrete slab on the national highway near Nileshwaram. Following his initial treatment at a Nileshwaram hospital, he was later placed on ventilator support in Kannur as his condition worsened.

Kunhikannan’s death marks the end of an era for many who admired his commitment to his constituency and his contributions to Kerala’s political landscape.
