Thiruvananthapuram:  Vakkom Purushothaman, the former Kerala speaker and a senior Congress leader, passed away at the age of 95 in his residence at Kumarapuram on Monday. The news of his demise was confirmed by KIMS hospital.

Hailing from the capital city of Thiruvananthapuram, Purushothaman's political journey was illustrious. He served as a governor in both Mizoram and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, leaving his mark on different parts of the nation.

His political career began in 1946 as an activist of the Students' Congress, and he remained dedicated to the cause for over 35 years as a member of the All India Congress Committee. Notably, he represented the Attingal constituency five times, demonstrating his strong connection with the people.

Purushothaman's contributions extended to various governments, as he held ministerial positions in the cabinets of C Achutha Menon, E K Nayanar, and Oommen Chandy.

An important highlight of his career was his tenure as the speaker of the Kerala legislative assembly, where he held this position during 1982-1984 and later in 2001-2004.
