RIO DE JANEIRO: Luiz Felipe Scolari, a former head coach of Brazil, has agreed to lead Atletico Mineiro on a contract that lasts until after he turns 76.

The 74-year-old succeeds Argentine Eduardo Coudet, who resigned after last Saturday's 1-1 home tie with Bragantino in Brazil's Serie A league.

"One of the most successful managers in football history has signed with [us] until December 2024," the Belo Horizonte club announced in a statement on Friday.

Since parting company with Athletico Paranaense in December of last year, Scolari has not been involved in coaching. He then served as a director for the club with headquarters in Curitiba.

When he guided a Ronaldo-inspired Brazil to World Cup victory in Japan and South Korea in 2002, the Brazilian's 41-year coaching career reached its pinnacle.

Among other teams, he has previously served as manager of Portugal, Guangzhou Evergrande, Chelsea, and Palmeiras.

Next Wednesday's away match against Fluminense will mark his debut game in command of Atletico, who are currently fourth in the standings of Brazil's 20-team premier division.

Luiz Felipe Scolari, commonly known as Felipão, is a highly esteemed Brazilian football manager who has had a significant impact on the sport. He gained global recognition for his tenure as the head coach of the Brazilian national team, leading them to victory in the 2002 FIFA World Cup held in South Korea and Japan. Scolari's tactical acumen, coupled with his ability to inspire and motivate players, played a pivotal role in Brazil's success during that tournament.

Scolari's coaching style is characterized by his emphasis on team unity, discipline, and strong defensive organization. He has a reputation for instilling a winning mentality in his squads, fostering a sense of camaraderie among the players, and maximizing their potential on the field. Under his guidance, Brazil showcased a formidable balance between defensive solidity and attacking prowess, which ultimately culminated in their fifth World Cup triumph.
