Whether it’s the heart wrenching and gripping drama, Punjab 1984 or the romantic saga, Qismat, Punjabi cinema has over the years evolved by leaps and bounds. One can say that the filmmakers of Punjabi cinema aren’t afraid to experiment with new genres and are determined to put the Punjabi film industry onto the world map. The palette has certainly also become wider with the addition of OTT platforms such as Chaupal that offer its viewers a variety of content to choose from.

While the pandemic did have a setback for a majority of film production houses in India from a business point of view, it only made those filmmakers more committed to providing a unique experience to the viewers once the doors of theatres were opened again for good. In a similar vein, the founders of White Hill Studios, Manmord Sidhu and Gunbir Singh Sidhu gave an insight into what they have in store for us for 2022.

A romantic drama starring Gurnam Bhullar & Tania, Lekh directed by Manvir Brar and written by Jagdeep Sidhu is all set to release on 1st April 2022. “We are so excited to be back at the movies and show everyone what we’ve been doing all this while,” said, Manmord Sidhu who founded the company along with Gunbir Singh Sidhu back in 2012 joining hands for Jatt and Juliet. Talking about the trailer release of Lekh, Gunbir Singh Sidhu said “Definitely, the trailer has received an overwhelming response and we hope that the audiences love the film as much as they loved the trailer” The trailer that was released on 16th March 2022 has received positive responses from fans and news portals. The music album with Udd Gaya, Bewafai Kar Gaya, Mera Yaar, Beliya, Zaroori Nai has already had fans go all gaga over B Praak & Jaani’s soulful melodies. Now, only time will tell whether Lekh delivers the magic that it promises.

The founders also shed light on their upcoming film Shareek 2, the highly awaited sequel to the 2015 action drama Shareek that will see Jimmy Sheirgill, Dev Kharoud in principal roles. In addition to that, Jind Mahi starring Sonam Bajwa and Ajay Sarkaria, will bring back the much-loved on-screen couple from Ardab Mutiyaaran back on screens on 8th July 2022. Furthermore, White Hill Studios is also extensively working on the music front and will be seen collaborating with top music artists - Raftaar, Javed Ali, Papon, Stebin Ben and the like.

Both Gunbir Singh Sidhu and Manmord Sidhu are optimistic about what the future of Punjabi cinema entails and are making a conscious effort to bring something new to the table with every film whilst assuring that the audiences are thoroughly entertained. Definitely, the future of Punjabi cinema is bright and in good hands. Here’s hoping that more film and music production houses such as White Hill Studios curate content that not only transcends all types of boundaries and barriers but also uplifts and evolves the Punjabi entertainment industry as a whole.
