He was born on December 12, 1950 in Bangalore. Rajinikanth was born in a poor family. His father Ramoji Rao Gaekwad was a Police constable. Rajinikanth was the youngest of four siblings. His Mother Jijabai died and the family was disintegrated. Then Rajinikanth started working as a coolie. After this, he started working as a carpenter to earn money. After a long time, he became a bus conductor in the Bangalore Transport Service (BTS). His real name is Shivaji Rao Gaikwad. Along with work, he was interested in acting, due to which he joined the Madras Film Institute in 1973 and took a diploma in acting. His interest in acting led him to the south film Industry. The actor became a megastar. He is one of the actors who even now worked as lead.

Besides his film Rajinikanth also remained in news for his love affair with Silk Smitha. The actress became overnight with her film, Sadma, with Kamal Haasan. She was known for her sensuous roles, and for fearlessly wearing a bikini, which was quite a bold move in the 80's. Silk was also tagged as "a B-grade heroine". Rajinikanth and Silk also worked in various hit films.

It is also said that Dirty Picture is based on Silk Smita’s life, Naseeruddin Shah's character who lusted for the Silk, played by Vidya Balan was said to be based on Rajinikanth. His fans did not take this lying down, and actually threatened violence.  After this makers had to clarify, and said that the character was an aging actor, and Rajini had been in his prime when he worked with Silk.
