Ramanand Sagar was born on 29 December 1917 in Lahore. His name at birth was Chandramouli. His grandfather immigrated from Peshawar and settled in Kashmir along with the family. He later became city Seth of the city. When Ramanand was 5 years old, his mother died. He was adopted at an early age by his maternal uncle. His name was changed from Chandramouli to Ramanand Sagar.
