The festival of Ganga Dussehra is going to be celebrated on June 1 this year. Today we are going to tell you a story related to Ganga.

According to Mahabharata - King Shantanu fell in love with the river Ganges. When the king asked her to marry, Ganga placed a condition in front of Shantanu that she should have complete freedom to work according to her, the day Shantanu would stop her for anything, she would leave him. Shantanu accepted this condition of Ganga and got married. After marriage, whenever Ganga gave birth to a child, she used to shed it in the river immediately.

Shantanu could not stop Ganga from doing this work because of his promise. He was afraid of losing Ganga. When the eighth child took birth, Shantanu stopped Ganga and asked why she sheds her children in the river like this? Ganga said, today you have broken my condition for your child. Now this child will be with you. Shantanu saved his child, but Ganga left him. The boy was named Devavrata.

After a few years, Ganga came to him and by then he had become a great warrior and a pious. Shantanu accepted the renunciation of a goddess-like Ganga for a son. Devavrata had vowed to remain unmarried for a lifetime to get Shantanu married to Satyavati. After which it was named Bhishma. It was Bhishma who protected his father's clan till the last.
