Gender Disparities Emerge: Critique on Women's Representation in UP Congress

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Congress has recently unveiled its new executive, marking a significant development since Ajay Rai assumed the role of state president. The composition of the executive, consisting of 130 officials, including 16 vice-presidents, has drawn attention and sparked discussions about the party's future plans.

Demographic Insights:
Among the 130 officials in the new executive, 88 belong to the Dalit, Muslim, and OBC categories, while only three women secured positions. This has raised questions, especially considering that the party, led by Priyanka Gandhi, emphasized women empowerment during the 2022 UP Assembly elections.

Youth Representation:
The new executive reflects a conscious effort to provide opportunities to the youth, with 70 percent of the officials below the age of 50. Those above 60 years of age constitute less than 10 percent of the leadership.

Focus on OBC Representation:
Rahul Gandhi's recent focus on OBC issues is evident in the executive, with the highest number of officials belonging to the OBC category—43 out of 130. This aligns with Rahul Gandhi's ongoing campaign advocating for OBC rights.

Inclusivity in Regional Representation:
While attempting to address regional equations, the new executive includes leaders from various regions of Uttar Pradesh, such as Western UP, Braj, Awadh, Bundelkhand, and Purvanchal.

Criticism on Women Representation:
Despite efforts to ensure diversity, criticism has emerged due to the limited representation of women, with only three female officials out of the total 130. This stands in contrast to the party's earlier emphasis on women's roles in leadership.During the UP elections, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had given the slogan 'Ladki hun, Lad sakti hun' and had promised to provide representation to women, but it has been completely ignored.

The unveiling of the new executive signals a strategic move by the UP Congress to balance demographic considerations and regional representation. The challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the party will likely be influenced by the effectiveness of this leadership composition.
