Hundreds of flights to and from German airports were cancelled on Monday as security employees across the country went on strike over pay.
On Monday, security workers are launching a full-day strike at airports across the country, including Duesseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, and Berlin, with further strikes planned for Tuesday, including in Frankfurt and Hamburg.
Several flights were cancelled at Frankfurt Airport owing to a strike called by the trade union ver.di, according to the German news agency DPA. Employees of the cargo and passenger controls at Germany's largest airport ceased working around 2 a.m., according to a ver.di spokesperson.
Passengers with layovers were the only ones allowed to get past security at Frankfurt. All passengers expecting to take a flight in Frankfurt were advised not to travel to the airport, according to airport operator Fraport. Fraport reports that 130 of the 818 flights scheduled for Tuesday have been cancelled. Approximately 71,000 passengers were expected to arrive at the airport that day.
