German President gets into self-isolation after his bodyguard gets corona infected

Germany has recorded a surge in cases. The country's President Frank-Walter Steinmeier got into quarantine Saturday after one of his bodyguards tested positive for Covid-19, as per a spokeswoman for the president’s office. Steinmeier’s first test turned out to be negative. Further tests are designed in the coming days. Germany on Saturday reported 7,830 new infections of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, the highest daily spike since the pandemic began.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas went into self-isolation in September after one of his bodyguards had caught Covid-19. Maas later tested negative for the virus. In March, German Chancellor Angela Merkel self-quarantined for two weeks after meeting with an infected doctor. She later tested negative. As of now, the country has recorded over 361,733 cases. On October 17, the nation reported 7,830 new cases, marking the largest surge in cases since the pandemic began. Meanwhile, an aide to Chancellor Angela Merkel is recorded to have said that with hard months to come and a stricter clampdown, people will have to stop traveling and partying.

The German Chancellor's chief of staff, Helge Braun, told public broadcaster ARD that the administration has plans to cap the total number of people allowed in public premises, much like England, and sweeping measures to curb transmission rate as Germany battles the second wave.  Only the politicians' and the population's determination will decide whether or not we can avoid it, or slow it down, Braun said on air in an interview with Germany's public-service broadcaster ARD.
