Berlin: A German court sentenced a woman to more than nine years in prison on Wednesday for enslaving a Yazidi woman and for participating in war crimes and genocide while a member of Daesh.

According to a spokeswoman for the court in the western city of Koblenz, the 37-year-old German defendant, who was only identified as Nadine K., was also found guilty of crimes against humanity and affiliation with a foreign terrorist group.

Between December 2014 and March 2019, the defendant travelled to Syria with her husband to join the jihadist organisation. The couple initially relocated to Mosul in Iraq in 2015 before returning to Syria.

Yazidi woman who had been held captive by Daesh since 2014 was kept as a slave by the pair starting in April 2016.
When the woman, who was 22 at the time, attempted to leave, Nadine K. kept watch to stop her and made her perform housework and follow Islamic customs.

The defendant knew that Nadine K.'s husband regularly beat and raped the Yazidi woman.

At the beginning of the trial earlier this year, the prosecution stated, "All of this served the declared purpose of Daesh, which was to wipe out the Yazidi faith."
According to reports, Nadine K. and her family moved to Syria in the autumn of 2016 with their "slave" and remained there until March 2019 when they are thought to have been captured by Kurdish fighters and the Yazidi woman was freed.

When the defendant returned to Germany in March of last year, she was detained as part of one of many repatriation operations.
