Germany announced on May 31 that Ukraine can use weapons provided by Western countries to defend itself from attacks originating just inside Russia, particularly in the northern border region around Kharkiv. This decision aligns with international law, Berlin confirmed.

The German government has been in discussions with its allies about Russia's attacks on the Kharkiv region from nearby Russian border areas. A government spokesperson emphasized, "We are collectively convinced that Ukraine has the right, under international law, to defend itself against these attacks."

The spokesperson added, "To achieve this, Ukraine can use the weapons supplied for defense purposes, including those provided by Germany, in accordance with international legal obligations."

This announcement follows days of scrutiny on Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government regarding its position on whether Kyiv could use German weapons to strike into Russian territory. Germany's statement clarifies that Ukraine is permitted to use Western-supplied weapons for defense against Russian attacks near Kharkiv, underlining Ukraine's right to self-defense within legal boundaries.

The clarification from Germany comes at a crucial time as tensions in the region escalate. Ukraine has been under relentless attack from Russian forces, particularly in border areas like Kharkiv, which has seen significant shelling and missile strikes. By reaffirming Ukraine's right to use Western-supplied weapons, Germany aims to strengthen Ukraine's defensive capabilities and support its sovereignty. This move also signals a unified stance among Western allies in their commitment to Ukraine's defense, amidst ongoing scrutiny and geopolitical complexities.
