Authorities in Germany have taken decisive action against the right-wing extremist Compact magazine, conducting searches in four states following a ban issued by the Interior Ministry. The ministry stated that Compact magazine, known for its wide social media presence and circulation of 40,000, has been inciting hatred and undermining democratic values.

Search operations targeted properties linked to Compact magazine and the homes of its key figures and shareholders in Brandenburg, Hesse, Saxony, and Saxony-Anhalt. The goal was to seize assets and gather evidence related to the publication's activities.

Interior Minister Nancy Faeser described Compact as a central mouthpiece for the right-wing extremist scene, accusing it of spreading hate against Jews, migrants, and democratic institutions. The ban extends to Compact's subsidiary, Conspect Film, prohibiting any continuation of their previous activities.

Compact magazine's editor-in-chief, Juergen Elsaesser, has yet to comment on the ban. The ministry highlighted that the magazine promotes a societal framework that discriminates against certain ethnic groups, contributing to social marginalization.

What is Compact magazine?

Authorities in Germany have cracked down on Compact magazine, a publication known for its circulation of 40,000 copies and online presence including Compact TV. The magazine, led by Jürgen Elsässer, has faced scrutiny for promoting divisive content.

The Interior Ministry's recent ban on Compact magazine extends to its subsidiary, Conspect Film, aiming to curb activities deemed detrimental to societal harmony. The magazine has been accused of inciting hatred against minorities and undermining democratic values.

Compact magazine's operations also include an online store selling merchandise, such as a controversial coin featuring Björn Höcke, a far-right politician convicted for using a Nazi slogan. This move adds to previous actions against Compact, including the removal of its social media accounts by Meta's Facebook and Instagram platforms in 2020 due to hate speech violations.

Despite setbacks, far-right elements like the Alternative for Germany (AfD), associated with figures like Höcke, continue to exert influence in German politics.
