Former Australia wicketkeeper batsman Adam Gilchrist confirmed after 12 years of retirement from the Test that he had decided to quit Test cricket after dropping a catch by VVS Laxman in Adelaide. He says that Indian batsman Laxman and off-spinner Harbhajan Singh had started facing problems for the Australian team in the early 2000s. Gilchrist, 48, told TV presenter Madonna Tixeira's show Live Connect, "Laxman used to score a lot of runs against us along with the rest of India's batsmen and then Harbhajan came and took our wickets." It is noteworthy that Laxman had scored 2434 runs against Australia in the middle of his Test career (1998-2012) with an average of 49.67. In which he had 6 centuries and 12 half-centuries.

Gilchrist announced his retirement in 2008 against Adelaide in a Test match played against India. It was reported that he had taken this decision after leaving the catch of Laxman. In the middle of the fourth Test of that series against India, Gilchrist surprised everyone by announcing his retirement. Australia won that series 2–1. He broke the silence after 12 years.

He told, 'If you leave Laxman's catch in a Test match, then I think this is a good reason for retiring. You cannot give them more opportunities. Gilchrist has said that he always wanted to retire while in good form'. He said, 'As far as retirement is concerned, I always used to think that I am retiring when people say that you are playing and not why you don't retire.' Gilchrist made 395 international matches with 905 victims, including 813 catches and 92 stumpings. This is his second best number after South Africa's Mark Boucher (998).
