GK Pillai, a popular Malayalam veteran actor, passed away this morning owing to age-related difficulties. He is claimed to be the industry's oldest actor, he died at the age of 97. GK Pillai served in the Indian Army and Navy before entering the film industry.
He has been acting for 65 years and has appeared in over 325 Malayalam films. He is credited with revolutionising the antagonist character in Indian film and television. GK Pillai made his Malayalam film debut in 1954 with the film 'Snehaseema,' and continued to perform till 2018.
His films include Snapaka Yoyannan, Sthanarthi Saramma, Ashwamedham, Aromal Unni, Choola, Harichandran, Karyasthan, and others. He took a break in the 1990s after a lustrous career in the 1980s, then returned to acting in 2005, making his television debut. He made his television debut in the horror serial 'Kadamattathu Kathanar' in 2004 and rose to prominence in the 2011 soap Kukumapoovu as Colonel Jagannatha Varma, Jayanthi's father.
For his contributions to film, GK Pillai received three Lifetime Achievement Awards, as well as Best Actor and Prem Nazir Award.
