Glenda Jackson, an Oscar-winning British actress who passed away on Thursday at the age of 87, portrayed strong women on stage and film before switching to politics, where she was not hesitant to speak truth to power.

When she started playing again in her 80s, she chose King Lear, one of the most difficult roles in all of theatre, and she received accolades for it.

As a feisty young artist in "Women in Love" (1970) and as a feminist in the romantic comedy "A Touch of Class" (1973), Jackson won two Oscars for best actress decades earlier.

Jackson was born on May 9, 1936, to a bricklayer and a cleaning lady in Birkenhead, a small port city close to Liverpool in northwest England.She started working in a chemist's shop when she was 16 and performed amateur theatre in her free time.She received a scholarship to the famed Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London when she was 18 years old.Jackson was hired by the Royal Shakespeare Company, where he served as director under renowned filmmaker Peter Brook from 1964 until 1968.She played Ophelia in "Hamlet" and Charlotte Corday in "Marat/Sade" in 1965, two of her most notable roles with the theatre.She also worked in film, where she enjoyed significant success in the early 1970s.
