Goa government issues notice to JSW Steel, asks to pay Rs 156 crore in 15 days

Panaji: Goa government has issued a notice to JSW Steel Limited to repay Rs 156.34 crore. In the notice, the company has been asked to pay this amount within 15 days as Goa Rural Reform and Welfare Cess for transportation of coal. This demand notice has been issued on 9 November 2020. However, its copy was revealed on Monday.

In the notice, the state's Assistant Transport Director has asked JSW Steel to pay Rs 156.34 crore in 15 days. When contacted, a company spokesperson declined to comment. The notice states that if the cess is not paid, the representative of the company may face imprisonment for two years or a fine of Rs 25,000. The government has said that the company was sent a notice on September 4, 2020 for not paying the cess.

The company has been sent a notice to pay this cess for transportation of coal from the Mormugao Port Trust to the plant site. The representative of the company was asked to appear before the Transport Department on 16 September 2020. The notice stated that the company, in its reply on 13 October 2020, stated that due to the global pandemic corona virus, its limited staff were coming to work.
